The Richmond Shakespeare Festival (us) would like to hire one Technical Director (you) for our two Summer repertory productions (A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Titus Andronicus).  Our venue, Earlham College’s McDaniel Studio Theater, is a state-of-the-art black box seating approximately 125 in a 20’x20’ thrust arrangement.

Our application deadline is March 2nd.  Interviews (by phone, Skype, or in person) will begin on 15 February 2015. Consultation with Directors to determine e.g. production schedules will begin immediately in order to support auditions, and will occur regularly between March 15 and 30 June (the end of strike).    We also ask that you be resident during the final two weeks of production (May 29 – June 12) in order to supervise and assist shop hands, interns, and volunteers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creation of all scenic shop drawings.

  • Collaborating with the Scenic Designer and Shop Foreman on the execution of the Scenic design, including the planning, build, load-in, tech and maintenance of scenery.

  • Supervising and assisting shop co-workers during build, installation, rigging, and strike of sets.

  • Collaborating with the Guest Directors, Designers, and others to create a scenic environment so compelling and ingenious that critics will want to buy it dinner.

Requirements for the position:

  • Mastery of wood scenic construction and fabrication techniques, as well as skill with welding, rigging, and electrics.

  • Excellent scheduling, budgeting, and communication skills.

  • Ability to motivate and coordinate volunteers, interns, and students of varying skill levels.

  • A driver’s license and clean driving record.  We prefer you have your own car.

  • We also prefer you produce scenic shop drawings in CAD.

Finally:  We are a small festival with a small staff, which means that we need to hire flexible, adaptive people.  We’d prefer someone with a sense of humor, generosity of spirit, and non-self-destructive coping mechanisms.
